a year-long queer feminist intervention into/at Schwules Museum, curation and project management, 2018
Here I will feature some of the things happening during the year that I am specifically involved in, that I commission or curate. Generally speaking, I am doing the curation and project management together with my collegue of the Board of Directors, Dr. Birgit Bosold. The whole board and museum made a commitment to support the project.
We initiated it as a political statement addressing female* and lesbian under-representation basically everywhere and especially in the Schwules Museum. The museum wants to speak to, for and of the whole LGBTQI* spectrum officially since 2008, but still has a white-cis-gay-male structure in its programming, staff and archive. Furthermore we want to practise new forms of curating in the Museum that comes from a grassroots activist background and is mainly run by volunteers without a chief curator but an "exhibition team" open for everyone to join. Making the effort of dedicating a whole year to a theme is a challenge for the whole house. One year of (queer) feminism is a radical curation in itself for a museum, more so in a space with a history of separatism of the sexes, genders and desires. I personally aim at strenghtening lesbian, trans and female*/feminine* positions, both on individual and collective levels within the museum and beyond, to work through the history and present of oppression and misogyny, trying to do my best to work intersectionally within our capacities and networks, attract a new, open minded audience with which to form new /renew old alliances and to emphasize the relevance of combining artistic, activist and theoretical visions as driving forces for understanding herstories and futures. It is important to know that the YEAR OF THE WOMEN* has not been planned since some years, but happens as an intervention, live on the spot. The content will take shape throughout the year with some fixed points in the schedule like the programmed exhibitions and other formats. The procedural character of the programming that leaves space for new to be found connections, ideas and insights is a vital part of the intended layout. Call it durational endurance art ;-)
YEAR OF THE WOMEN* is supported by the Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa (Senate Department for Culture and Europe).
